System Dynamics and Structural Durability

The structural motto of the ECS Simulation Conference 2021 reflects the progress in the field of dynamic simulation and how to use the results for both durability analysis and testing.


>Dynamic< loads are misinterpreted regularly, meaning either (1) cyclic loadings and stresses or (2) movements of bodies involving relevant inertia forces or (3) vibration states with system resonances.
Whereas the first meaning is a classical durability topic only, the second and especially the third meanings are complex simulation, measurement and testing topics.
Dynamic involves challenges how to assure correct forces, vibration amplitudes and how to efficiently produce fatigue lives from it.

Everything is closely connected and standardized, such as how to measure loads, properties or material properties, how to do dynamic simulations with MBS or FEA, how to use the results in fatigue analyses for highly efficient test benches.
Although accuracy and efficiency have been greatly enhanced over the past years, there is still room for improvement. For instance, it needs to be researched how to describe contact in dynamic systems, how to assess sheet joints in fatigue analysis and how to deal with simplified loadings for fatigue testing…

Lectures will focus on the following fields:


​​​​​​​Fatigue analysis delivers the final assessment of component´s structural durability performance bringing together all system information generated by measurement, MBS and FEA before.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​


​​​​​​​Dynamic analysis of systems and vehicles often plays the intermediate role in the engineering CAE process, receiving information from measurements (loads, responses, properties) and delivering information to fatigue analysis and testing.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​


Signal processing and generation supports the development process in several instances like conversion of raw measurement data, generation of loads for MBS models and definition and optimization of load spectra for validation testing.
